Our alumni are living proof of our school’s mission: preparing students for a rapidly changing world and developing committed life-long learners ready for the responsibilities and expectations of global citizenship. Get connected and learn more about exciting alumni updates and news!

With more than 1,500 graduates to date, and thousands of former students who have attended AIS over the many years since we opened our doors in 1986 on Waterloo Road, our alumni community is growing strong with the aim of becoming even more active. Interested former faculty and staff are also welcome as members of our AIS alumni community. Our mission is to give our alumni a platform to engage and connect with one another, and build pride and commitment to each other and the school.

The AIS Alumni Association (AISAA) was officially launched in December 2009. Through the efforts of Class and Regional Agents, together with support from the AIS Development Office, the AISAA organized the inaugural AIS Alumni Cup on December 18, 2009. The AISAA also arranged a series of alumni reunions in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Vancouver, Sydney, London, Toronto, New York and Hong Kong. For many of our alumni, these reunions have been wonderful occasions. Giving alums the opportunity to see old friends and classmates for the first time since leaving CIS or AIS is something the association is keen to promote. Alums have also been reconnecting with the school. In collaboration with our High School’s Counseling Office, we have welcomed a number of alumni back to AIS to speak at to our students about their experiences and expertise. As we look to the future, we are confident the AISAA will continue to play an active and visible role in the life of our school.

Our History

We have had a long and powerful journey since our establishment in 1986. Of special importance, our Core Value of LOVE drives our philosophy and approach to learning and to all we do throughout these years without changing.

Love leads our planning, thinking, and practice.

That mindset tangibly demonstrates our care and commitment to a bigger purpose, and it drives our collective efforts to develop responsible, caring, global citizens.

1986–1987
Founding of the School Dr. Thomas T.S. Liang founds the school as California International School at 143 Waterloo Road with an initial cohort of 50 students.

” I recall the 1980 meeting in San Francisco, California with Bishop John S. Cummins, Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy, and Professor David H. Pyle. We discussed educational trends for the youth of Hong Kong and ascertained that there would be an increasing number of youth studying abroad. To meet this anticipated need, we decided to establish an international school in Hong Kong to ease transition to the American education system. We, therefore, established AIS in 1986, formerly named the California International School.“

1988–1989
Inaugural Graduation The first graduating class comprises 11 high school seniors with a commencement ceremony held at the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club Theatre.

1993–1994
Campus Relocation California International School moves to 123–125 Waterloo Road and establishes its current permanent home.

1996–1997
Official Renaming The school is officially renamed American International School (AIS) and becomes registered as a not-for-profit organization.

1998–1999
PTA Formation The AIS Parent-Teachers’ Association is officially formed to foster a stronger school community.

2000–2001
15th Anniversary & Expansion AIS celebrates its 15th anniversary with the launch of the Middle School program.

2002–2003
Elementary Restructuring The elementary program separates into two distinct divisions known as Elementary School and Early Childhood.

2003–2004
The House System AIS transitions from its original primary color houses—Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue—to a new House system featuring Red Phoenix, White Tigers, and Blue Dragons.

2006–2007
High School Expansion The new High School campus building opens its doors at 121 Waterloo Road.

2007–2008
Campus Milestones & Accreditation A new 25-meter swimming pool opens at 123 Waterloo Road and AIS receives a maximum six-year accreditation term from WASC.

2017–2018
Uniform Refresh AIS introduces new physical education uniforms for both summer and winter seasons across all grade levels.

2020–2021
Student Led Design & WASC Success New high school lockers are installed based on student designs from OELP Infinity Week. AIS also secures another maximum six-year WASC accreditation.

2021–2022
35th Anniversary AIS celebrates 35 years as a global family and unveils the time capsule originally sealed during the 25th anniversary.

2024–2025
GBA Awards & 40th Anniversary AIS wins the Public Choice Award at the GBA School Awards and celebrates its 40th anniversary alongside the retirement of longtime faculty member Mr. Georges Raybaud.
