Did you know that Niilo Nissinen (Class of 2024) is one of Hong Kong’s top young chess players? From September 23 to October 8, 2023, Niilo represented Hong Kong at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, competing against some of the best adult players in the world. While the team faced tough competition, Niilo distinguished himself as the only Hong Kong player to win a match, demonstrating incredible skill, focus, and resilience.
Niilo’s passion for chess began in New York during his primary school years, where he regularly attended chess clubs and camps. Today, he trains with a coach who helps him sharpen strategies, memorize moves, and tackle new challenges. He dedicates about two hours a day to practice, balancing rigorous training with schoolwork. Niilo’s achievements include a fastest win in just four moves, though he also acknowledges humbling losses—like a game lost in ten moves!
Chess has taught Niilo more than just strategy; it has strengthened his focus, discipline, and determination—qualities he applies to both his academic and personal life. He hopes to continue representing Hong Kong in future tournaments and perhaps even earn a living through competitive chess.
