11.12 Family & Student Update

Dear Parents, Students and Families,

Only 4 more weeks to go until the Winter Fair! Faculty, staff, and of course our wonderful PTA Executive Committee are all hard at work preparing for the event. Student performances will be recorded on 30 November and 1 December. You will be hearing about what students are to wear on these days from your student’s teachers. We are so excited to share our musical performances with you very soon! If you missed our previous announcements, please check out the information below for more details about the upcoming Winter Fair. And please don’t forget to make a donation if you can. We’re counting on our parents’ long-standing generosity to make our event a success.

Speaking of generosity, special thanks goes out this week to the Liang family for their very generous gift of a Playstation 5! I know a few people who would love to win that Grand Prize Raffle draw. Thank you as well to an anonymous donation of an Xbox Series S and to Mr. and Mrs. Lin Andy (Grade 5) and Leo’s parents (Grade 3) for their lovely donation of Wellcome Coupons! Please keep those prizes coming!

Winter Fair

As you know, on Friday, 10 December, from 6:30 – 8:00 PM, we will be virtually celebrating student learning in music with everyone in the AIS community. Our plan is to live stream pre-recorded music performances from EC1 – Grade 12 to all AIS homes and families while hosting the evening LIVE on campus, facilitated by members of the PTA Executive Committee, select AIS Faculty, and the full AIS Leadership Team. In between our pre-recorded musical numbers, we will be drawing raffle tickets LIVE for a range of wonderful prizes.

As we have done for all previous Winter Fairs, we are asking AIS families for prize donations for the event. Our parents have always been extremely generous with their prize donations and have gifted the school with iPads, iPhones, Apple Watches, Nintendo Games, gift certificates, family dinners, hotel stays, and much, much more. Since we were unable to raise funds last year due to the global pandemic, your generosity is greatly appreciated and much needed to make our evening special. Families or businesses whose donations exceed HK$5,000.00 will be credited/acknowledged in the AIS yearbook as well as the school website.

To donate a prize for this year’s Winter Fair, simply bring your gift to the AIS Office and ask for our Director of Admissions and Advancement, Ms. Vicky Lam, or our Admissions Officer, Ms. Candice Ng. If you have any questions, feel free to email Vicky at vlam@ais.edu.hk.

Raffle Tickets

Congratulations to our AMAZING students and Visual Arts Faculty who created these gorgeous images that adorn our Winter Fair Raffle Prize Tickets! They are absolutely lovely, and we’re very excited to be sharing them with you soon. Tickets will go on sale and home with students very soon and more information will follow. Special thanks to Ms. Shackleton, Ms. Noonan, and Ms. Reeves for supporting this initiative and to Ms. Charmian Liang, our school designer who created these lovely raffle tickets!

PTA

You are welcome to join us in person or online this coming Wednesday, 17 November at 3:15 for our next PTA meeting. We will be reviewing our plans for the Winter Fair and more. For those who are unable to make it, please see the Winter Fair update below. If you would like to attend the meeting on campus, we ask that you fill out this Google Form with information about your COVID-19 vaccination status. We are happy to welcome you on campus if you are fully vaccinated and complete the form with your vaccination records. Otherwise, you can join the meeting via this Zoom link by using the password love.

Time Capsule

As part of our upcoming Winter Fair, we will be sharing the contents of our AIS Time Capsule. The time capsule was originally established in honor of the opening of the new AIS Elementary School building 10 years ago, on December 2, 2011. We are all curious about what is inside. The good news is that everyone will be given an opportunity to guess what they think the contents of the capsule are very soon! Contest winners will be able to select an item to include in the new time capsule which will be developed in the new year and opened on the school’s 50th anniversary! Stay tuned for more details!!

Literacy Week

Next week, our wonderful Elementary and Middle School Divisions will celebrate Literacy Week from 15 – 19 November. Literacy Week is just one of the ways that the AIS PTA supports our students with special opportunities. In fact, our world-class guest authors this year are all proudly sponsored by the AIS PTA. Through generous donations like yours, these special events are made possible. The week promises to be fun-filled for students. Please see Ms. Morrison’s and Mr. Post’s Weekly Updates for details about the activities that students will enjoy all week, including dressing up as their favorite character, hearing new stories read aloud to them, and more! To listen to Barack and Michelle Obama read Peter Reynold’s, The Word Collector, simply follow this LINK.

My sincere thanks to our Elementary Teachers Ms. Suarez, Ms. Akaishi, Ms. Park, Ms. Smith, Ms. Du Plessis, Ms. Stice, Ms. Gibbs for their hard work preparing for the event and to Ms. Durrant, Mr. Khader, and Mr. Goga for all they did to get ready in Middle School.

Winter Uniform

Just a friendly reminder that all students should be in their Winter Uniform on Monday 15 November.

Charitable Free Dress Day – 19 November for Nepal Moonlight Foundation

Our upcoming Charitable Free Dress Day Friday on 19 October is dedicated to a very special school in Nepal. We have had an ongoing partnership with the Moonlight School for many years. AIS High School students have traditionally visited the school to perform community service work there every year, as a regular part of our Outdoor Education Leadership Program (OELP). The school operates on funding provided from visiting schools around the world, and since the pandemic has made it impossible to host visiting schools for two years in a row, they are grateful for any external funding support we can provide. Here are a couple of images of our students sharing the AIS Love with their students.

I have some exciting news to share with you next week, but you will have to wait until then to learn more about our inspiring new plans.

Until then, thank you for continuing to make AIS your school of choice. We truly adore your children.

Happy Weekend, everyone!

My best,

Anita Simpson
Head of School
