04.09 Family & Student Update

Dear Parents, Students and Families,

It was truly wonderful to see our students again this week and to feel the incredible energy and enthusiasm they bring with them to campus every day. Their joy is contagious!! Our faculty designed wonderful learning experiences that kept students engaged in learning and safely interacting with their peers. We are grateful that we are able to spend time with each other in socially-distanced settings once again.

Transitions

It’s hard to believe but the time has come where we begin transitioning staff to new positions and opportunities. This year, we start with our Elementary Principal.

Ms. Cami Okubo

It is with a full heart and deep gratitude that I begin the process of saying goodbye and extending warm, best wishes to Ms. Cami Okubo, Elementary Principal.

Cami has led the AIS Elementary School for the last three years with passion, integrity, and a fierce loyalty to both the school and community. She has worked tirelessly to promote social justice, equity and inclusion, and to ensure that all children and staff see themselves reflected in the AIS community.

Georgetown Day School, the first integrated school in Washington DC, will welcome Cami as Lower School Principal this July. She and her husband, Roger Gula, and their son Raiden, are looking forward to the opportunity to be closer to family.

Cami is sincerely grateful for the opportunity to partner with AIS faculty, staff, and parents in support of student well-being and learning. For Cami, our cherished AIS students are truly remarkable, and she passionately believes that their care for one another and confidence in their abilities will continue to shine brightly in the years to come.

We must also acknowledge our gratitude for the many contributions that her husband, Roger has made in his role as guest architect at AIS; for example, he was integral to designing our new entryway, Gate 123, the recently-installed High School lockers, and now our new AIS Facility Plan. Thank you for making our world a more beautiful place.

I know you will all join me in wishing Cami and her family all the best on their new adventure!

Ms. Linda Morrison

It is with genuine excitement and sincere enthusiasm that I welcome Ms. Linda Morrison to the role of Elementary Principal at AIS. Linda is a passionate educational leader and lifelong learner. She has over 12 years experience in international schooling, including being part of the leadership team in an elementary school of approximately 900 students and 100 faculty for the last seven years. Her experience with American curriculum schooling is extensive.

Linda brings with her an unfaltering commitment to fostering student learning and building relationships with all stakeholders in each child’s educational journey. She is dedicated to working closely with educators and parents to increase students’ growth and achievement to allow students to be as successful as they can be. Linda has participated in various accreditation teams including CIS and MSA and has experience in establishing teaching and learning styles to allow for student-driving and inquiry based learning opportunities. She is passionate about standards based teaching and learning, grading and reporting. She strives to prepare her students for future opportunities and follow their own dreams as digital creators and global citizens.

With ten years previous experience in the business sector, Linda has a unique skill set that combines a business acumen with an educational mindset. Prior to Cairo, Linda lived and worked in the UK and Australia. She has experience in both American and UK curricula and keeps abreast of current educational research into best practices across the education sector.

Please join me in welcoming Linda, her husband, Sameh Abbas, and her son, Zayn Abbas, to the AIS family! We’re thrilled they will be joining us!

I hope the weekend ahead is good to you. Stay safe, and let us know if there’s anything you need.

My best,

Anita Simpson
