During 21-25 May, 2012, ES students, teachers and parents were involved in a full week of literacy activities to celebrate the emphasis and importance AIS places on literacy. Teacher leaders planned a range of engaging activities that enhanced the work covered by teachers on a daily basis in our literacy program at AIS. Special thanks to parent volunteers and the teachers who spent countless hours preparing for this third annual event.
Monday Activities:
Literacy Week was formally opened by the E.S. Principal, Dr. Beckie Bouchard, as she read “The Emperor’s New Clothes” to the students and “opened” the week symbolically with many students dressed up in red T-shirts to highlight the day’s theme: “Wear Red and Be Well Read.” Badges were distributed to students later that day in their classrooms.
Tuesday Activities:
Multi-aged literacy rotations including art, craft, drama, reading and interactive whiteboard activities were provided throughout the day.
Wednesday Activities:
Language games, interactive literacy and “poem in your pocket” were the activities pursued on this day.
Thursday Activities:
Buddy reading and Reading relays were the feature of Thursday’s schedule. Upper grade and lower grade students were paired together throughout the day.
Friday Activities:
The whole school “Dress Up” parade culminated the week’s activities where students and teachers from all the classes assembled in the undercover area and paraded. In the afternoon, students and teachers joined the elementary school for Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). During this time students independently read a book of their choice and were provided with specially designed bookmarks. It was a fun day for all and an excellent way to end an exciting week celebrating literacy at AIS.
