|Middle School Adventure Week 2011|
Grade 6 Adventure Week 2011
The sixth grade camp adventure week this year took place in Mui Wo, Lantau.
Adventure week began with pitched tents at a campsite along a gorgeous and secluded stretch of beach. For one night, they braved the elements and weather. Then, after an exhausting two days of physical and team-building activities on the beach, they headed to the relative comfort of the YWCA, which served as their base for the rest of the week.
The adventure week activities included hiking, bouldering, kayaking, play-acting, and learning to help one another through all the physically and intellectually demanding activities designed by their professional instructors.
For many, it was their first time away from not only their parents, but all the modern comforts of their daily urban lives; and yet, despite difficulties, students not only survived, but thrived!
Grade 7 Adventure Week 2011
This year’s seventh grade camp took place in Sai Kung’s country park.
Students took part in a number of activities, such as navigating a rope course and creating ‘land art’ from the various natural materials found around the camp, and other activities they would usually not have access to, such as archery.
Aside from the activities students could partake in at the campsite, there were also two day excursions:
The first, which consisted of a junk trip to Hong Kong’s surrounding bays to study the fish farms and to snorkel; and the second, which consisted of an eco-trip to Hoi Ha Wan, a protected marine reserve within Sai Kung Country Park.
After a few days at the camp, the students embarked on the second part of the camp, a trip to spend two nights in tents within the country park. Once at the camp and cut off from civilization, the students had to learn to be more self sufficient, pitching their own tents and cooking their own food. The days were spent doing activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and learning some survival techniques.
It was a difficult and exhausting week for the students, but a rewarding one, where they forged stronger friendships through tasks that demanded physical and mental exertion, and teamwork.
Grade 8 Adventure Week 2011
The eighth grade spent a memorable 5-day adventure in Sai Kung, Hong Kong this year.
In this often grueling, yet rewarding adventure, the students learned to develop their leadership, teamwork, creativity and critical thinking skills through the many fun and educational activities organized by their professional instructors. These activities include hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, surfing, camping outdoors and teambuilding beach games.
All in all the kids had a great time in camp this year. Many were even disappointed to go home!
