Fundraising for Japan

Dear AIS Families,

I would like to extend my thanks to everyone for supporting the recent fundraising activities for those affected by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. It was humbling to see so many students, teachers, parents and alumni getting involved in this special fundraising campaign.

We started by organizing two Free Dress Days on Friday, 18 March and Wednesday 23 March, which raised HK$67,634. On Monday, 21 March, Monday 28 March and Tuesday 29 March, special bake sales were hosted on campus. With the support of high school students, our school’s PTA representatives and parents from our Japanese community, the bake sales raised a total of HK$20,229. Then on the evening of Friday, 25 March the school’s Development Office and the AIS Alumni organization hosted a reunion, which in turn raised an additional HK$8700 for the relief efforts. Finally, a single donation of HK$50,000 was given to the school from one of our families. This very generous donation brought the total amount raised by the AIS community to HK$146,563.

As we watched the devastation unfold in Japan, the initial sense of sadness and shock quickly gave way to a determination to act. We should all be very proud of our community’s response to this terrible disaster. Thank you to all the students and families who contributed baked goods, and to the parents who kindly volunteered their time to support the bake sales. Thank you to our alumni who also wanted to play a role in the school’s efforts to raise funds and, of course, to everyone else who made their own personal donations to help the people of Japan.

All the money raised has been donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) through the Hong Kong Japanese Club, which is in close coordination with the local government of the disaster-affected prefecture. Our community can be assured the funds will be distributed directly to those in most need.
