English Language Arts and the development of Literacy skills lie at the heart of our program. We recognize these are the primary tools for learning throughout the curriculum. There is a shared commitment by all teachers to strengthen reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This is achieved through a well resourced literature-rich environment supported by a carefully structured library program. Our program includes guided reading, home reading, and the Six Traits of Writing. At AIS we recognize the language environment strongly influences the quality of every child’s linguistic development.

Our Mathematics program is highly structured and provides students with a solid foundation upon which deeper understanding, confidence and enthusiasm can be built. The program systematically develops and strengthens a range skills and content knowledge, increasing understanding of number and operations, mathematical reasoning, statistics, measurement, probability and geometry.

A thematic approach to Science and Social Studies provides students and teachers with a rich context in which to explore and make sense of key concepts. Science themes include Physical Science, Earth Science and Life Science. Our units of work are thematic in design and regularly integrate Mathematics and Language Arts. Students reflect and share their discoveries, and apply scientific skills to everyday life.

Our school’s commitment to the growth of global citizens ensures Social Studies has an important role in the educational program across our school. A broad range of learning resources including multi-media, audio-visual and information technology help our students to develop a deeper understanding of humanity and the global responsibilities we share. Our ultimate goal is to promote social and civic responsibility among our students in an increasingly diverse, changing, and interdependent world.
