Mission & Philosophy

Serving families from Hong Kong’s local and expatriate communities since 1986, the American International School (AIS) is a fully accredited, independent, co-educational international school for students from Early Childhood through to Grade 12.

Our signature red-bricked campus located on Waterloo Road, in the prestigious and residentially exclusive Kowloon Tong district, is home to over 800 students from more than 30 countries. The mission of American international School is to prepare our students for a rapidly changing world and develop committed lifelong learners ready for the responsibilities and expectations of global citizenship. Recognized for the strong sense of community and connectedness amongst students, teachers and families alike, AIS is proud of the unique and enduring sense of belonging it promotes.

AIS is committed to providing an educational program that is well-balanced, student-centered and appropriately challenging for all. Our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) guide our students towards becoming well-rounded individuals, empowered thinkers, effective communicators and global citizens. We achieve these goals through a challenging academic program enriched by a broad and highly diverse extra-curricular program, vibrant visual and performing arts, an extensive sports program at both intra-mural and varsity levels, unique experiential learning opportunities, challenging leadership programs, dedicated community service, and a schoolwide commitment to supporting student success.

Recognized for its positive, student-centered approach to teaching and learning, AIS values the sense of community within the school. The school emblem, the eagle, is a universal symbol of strength, endurance and pride that unites everyone in our community under the motto: Justice, Knowledge and Love.

One thing that sets AIS apart is its close-knit community where peers of different backgrounds, ages, grades, etc., quite naturally find themselves talking to each other and getting acquainted. More than anything, AIS prepared me most for the critical thinking process that accompanies all college-level work.

AIS offers a strong college-preparatory academic program built on US educational standards supported through teaching that reflects international best-practices. Our college-preparatory program has an established record of student admissions to some of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the United States, and internationally.
