Over 300 parents
attended the Parent Orientation Evening in the new 119 Hall on 6 September,
2012. Our Head of School Mr. Cameron Fox gave the following opening
address.
Mr. Fox
spoke about the successes we enjoyed as a school last year, and how proud we
should be as a school community. With reference to
a specially prepared video
from last year’s senior graduation ceremony, he highlighted the
quality of our senior class and the fact that AIS graduates are continuing to
enroll in many of the finest colleges and universities both in the United
States and internationally*. He also spoke of the tremendous work that had been
done over the summer break to improve the campus facilities and thanked those
involved for their commitment and effort in getting things ready for the start
of the new school year.
Mr. Fox
outlined the school’s continued resolve to ensure high quality
teaching and learning remains central to its ongoing plans for continued school
improvement. He referred to the school’s commitment to new
technology, referencing two new Mac Labs that have been set up recently for
students in middle school and high school as well as the upcoming introduction
of i-Pads in our elementary school classrooms. To assist and support teachers
in their development of curriculum, He informed the audience that the school
had established a new position of Curriculum Coordinator and introduced Mr.
Marlon Ng, who will assume these responsibilities. Mr. Fox also reminded
families that this year the school would begin preparing for its next WASC
accreditation visit in spring 2014. He then introduced Ms Sandra Caswell, our
high school Head of Humanities who has accepted the position of WASC Self-Study
Coordinator for the following two years as we produce our self-study report for
WASC.
Mr. Fox emphasized
the importance of strong and effective communication between home and school,
and reminded parents of the important role our school’s website,
our
weekly newsletter, and the school’s e-mail system in keeping everyone
connected. He also invited all parents to make a commitment to participate more
fully with the PTA. He asked parents to recognize the important role of the PTA
in helping the school continue to improve, and encouraged parents to find the
time to lend support to their events, activities and meetings this
year.
Before
introducing the faculty, he finished his presentation with a reminder to
everyone that AIS is a learning community of students, families and teachers.
