Adventure Week 2009 Presentation Evening
South Africa.jpg
Between October 16th – 25th 2009, AIS High School students and faculty have been away taking part in different Outdoor Education and Leadership programs. By taking part in this cultural enrichment, adventure and service learning program, all have been challenged by and learned to overcome difficulties or fears. Students have discovered much about themselves and about the world around us. They have learned to live and work with others that we wouldn’t normally mix with, and have learned what it means to be part of a team or to lead others.

On the Kalahari Project in South Africa students went on Safari to see the Big 5 game animals, learned about Apartheid and AIDS and how these two issues have and are impacting this beautiful country. But it was the experience of living within and working at a very rural school for four days that had the most impact on our students.

In Indonesia, students went to Telunas Beach and helped to build a road for a local village. But the experience of hiking through a jungle and sleeping on a hammock or staying in a local villagers home had the most impact on the students and faculty involved with this cultural immersion program.

On the Bali trip students also spent much time learning about local culture. Students climbed a volcano before sunrise as well as rafted and mountain biked around the beautiful countryside and hills near Ubud. Students and staff worked with a local village school, and a hotel training school as well as learning Indonesian cooking and making masks and batiks Bali style.

AIS India trip 09 113.jpg
The India trip was an exciting mix of adventure and service set in the foothills of the Himalayas in the north of this beautiful and exotic country of contrasts. Students also had the opportunity to experience Indian food and culture and see and learn more about the incredible Taj Mahal.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand, students received training to develop their team-building and leadership skills. This was delivered through a variety of rigorous activities such as mountain biking, zip-roping, and rock-climbing, Our students had the opportunity to interact with the local culture by chatting with monks and helping a building project in a local village.

In China, freshman students went to Yangshuo and developed their friendships and teamwork skills in a variety of adventure, service and cultural activities.

Many seniors and some junior students went to the Sichuan province where they were involved with a building project helping to provide needed facilities to this earthquake-damaged and poor but beautiful region. Students also enhanced their Mandarin language skills on this trip as well as enjoying working with the scientists at and learning about Pandas at the Bifenxia Panda Institute.

New Zealand.JPG
The New Zealand trip provided students with the opportunity to ride a Zorb Ball and a Blokart, as well as caving in the dark. Students bonded well as a group and learned much about New Zealand’s beautiful country. They developed their geographical and scientific knowledge of the environment and conservation issues.

Students that stayed in Hong Kong experienced an adventurous week centered on a sailing, climbing and camping program, and service with Crossroads International.

We hope you can join us for the Presentation Evening on Thursday December 3rd, from 6-8pm, to hear more from each group during ‘Adventure Week’ 2009.
