All students entering G9 in the fall are required to
read Unwind by Neal Shusterman
Dear AIS Freshmen and Families,

It is my pleasure to inform you that the AIS Summer Reading Program will continue this summer. All students entering their freshman year will be required to read two novels during the summer break.

Students entering Grade 9 will be required to read Unwind, by Neal Shusterman and are invited to choose either, Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie or Earnest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.

These novels all tell the story of enduring relationships between characters, a subject found in much of Western literature and one that will be explored at the start of the freshman year. Moreover, these are critically acclaimed, enduring texts that have won numerous awards.

Although students are required to read these texts independently, some may choose to extend their enjoyment of these stories by using the resources listed in this packet. Plot summaries are also provided to help students to choose stories that they are more likely to enjoy reading.

Please note that summer reading and the subsequent class work completed at the beginning of the fall semester will be graded and included as part of the assessment for semester one.

By supporting your children in their sustained reading this summer, you are sending the message that reading is important and helping them to prepare for a successful freshman year. Attached please find descriptions of each novel so as to make informed choices. Additionally, helpful vocabulary lists for each novel are available on Moodle Online Learning for ENG1C Summer Reading Glossary.

Thank you and happy reading,

Miss Donni
