Chinese New Year Activities 2010

The Modern Languages Department planned a series of activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Before the festivities started, students from across the school took part in a number of seasonal activities.

Students were given the opportunity to practice their calligraphy skills by composing and then writing traditional Chinese couplets and seasonal messages of goodwill. Using ink and traditional Chinese writing brushes the students produced a wonderful selection of messages that not only helped them practice their traditional writing skills, but also provided a spectacular backdrop for the seasonal celebrations around the school.

Students made 3D models using red packets. This is a practice that originated in Singapore but has now become popular across the global Chinese community. In the spirit of creative competition, this excellent cross-curricular activity enabled high school students to showcase their craft work around the school. High school faculty and members of the AIS office staff were invited to judge the models.

Students made Chinese dumplings and shared them in class. This is a traditional practice in Nothern China which symbolizes the reunion of the family to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
