Welcome to Grade 1

Reading is a very important part of the first grade. We participate in reading centers where we work on many different activities based around reading. Students are encouraged to read daily and the take-home reading is supporting this endeavor.

Grammar is a foundation of language acquisition. Students learn how to form proper sentences, parts of speech, and proper punctuation which give them the skills they need for writing.

Writing is an important component of our literacy program. We follow Houghton Mifflin program to introduce six different genres of writing.

Our Math curriculum is published by Harcourt. Doing hands-on math games, we are learning to add and subtract, tell time, fractions, patterning, money (US & HK), shapes, graphs, and measurements.

During science, we study living and non-living, states of matter (water), solar system, weather, plants and animals.

During social studies, we combine Harcourt with Second Step (character education) as our guidelines. We study communities, map skills, major holidays in the US and China, feelings and attitude.
