Elementary School Literacy Week 2012
Monday, 21 May – Friday, 25 May

Literacy is a fundamental life-skill that takes a strong focus in our teaching and learning programs at AIS and it will be celebrated with a week of activities with the students in the elementary school.

Our Teacher Leaders have planned Literacy Week this year to celebrate the work the teachers and students have been doing in literacy and maintain the awareness of this emphasis in our school community.

Literacy Week will showcase the work that students, teachers and parents have been doing to improve students’ literacy skills and thereby improve outcomes and opportunities in a range of educational pursuits.

Some of the activities in which students will participate during a week of exciting whole school and classroom activities include:
  • Grand opening on Monday, 21 May at the elementary school’s Morning Announcements and a book will be read aloud by Ms. Bouchard during the assembly. In celebration of our theme, “Wear red and be well read” children are permitted to wear a red t-shirt or shirt and will be presented with a special badge in their classrooms on Monday.
  • Buddy reading
  • Literacy group rotations in multi-ages
  • Art, drama and story telling
  • Interactive literacy games
  • Bookmarks
  • Poetry
The week will culminate on Friday, 25 May with a special Dress-Up Day. A parade will be held for all students to dress up as their favorite book character beginning at 8:30 a.m. During the afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. we will observe a school wide “Drop Everything And Read” silent reading session to be held on the ground floor of the elementary building. Students, parents and teachers from throughout the school are invited to attend.

Every teacher and student has an important role to play in celebrating and promoting literacy in our school. We are asking each student to bring a book to donate toward their classroom libraries on Wednesday, May 23rd. Please encourage your child to participate, continue to read each day and enjoy the fun of Literacy Week 2012!

Sincerely,
Beckie Bouchard
